Can Foresight Be a Tool for Science Communication?

PCST Symposium 2025 Tokyo / Japan SciCom Forum 2025

Foresight is not about predicting the future, but about thinking, discussing, and shaping futures through a systematic process. It goes beyond collecting expert knowledge and data, engaging diverse stakeholders in iterative dialogues to explore possible and desirable futures.

Through this process, foresight fosters society’s capacity to move toward the future it envisions—making creative use of science and technology rather than merely accepting technology-driven futures. Drawing on Japan’s 12th Science and Technology Foresight Survey, this talk explores how foresight can serve as an effective tool for science communication, bridging science and society.
