The Idea of Cultured Science in Science Communication

PCST Symposium 2025 Tokyo / Japan SciCom Forum 2025

There is a familiar story we tell about science communication as culturing science by making specialist knowledge engaging to laypersons or by advancing a wider social conversation about critical issues missing in conventional scientific accounts. In this talk, I want to explore another story of science communication learning to notice, be inspired by and advancing cases of cultured science. Drawing on research at the ANU Centre for the Public Awareness of Science (CPAS) and collaboration with Shiga University, I will illustrate this idea with examples of scientists advocating for changing how science is done in order to tackle our shared planetary crises.
